About

HI THERE!

Welcome to the DishUp world, it is like the usual world, just vegan. It is a world where traditional meets modern and where only plants are being used to make things. It is a world where food tastes amazing, but nothing has to be sacrificed.

We started DishUp with a simple goal – to make traditional dishes from every country in the world, but in a vegan version. Cooking and eating vegan has never been easier and the need for animal products in the dishes is, in theory, reduced to the minimum. So why not apply it also in practice?! Well, that is exactly what we did. We took some of the most beloved traditional dishes and reinvented them in a plant-based form. We aim to visit every county in the world, discover its national and traditional dishes and make them suitable for vegans. We would like to offer an opportunity to those who have already chosen a plant-based diet to maybe bring back to life some of their food memories and dish cravings and to show those who are still skeptical, that they don’t have to sacrifice or give up of some of their favorite dishes, dishes with which they grew up and had their grandparents prepared for them for years.
We also wanted to learn more about the world through its many and diverse cuisines. And to pay tribute to the dishes that have been prepared for centuries and that our ancestors enjoyed for years. New dishes and recipes are being invented daily, and that is perfectly ok – there can never be too many food ideas. But our world and its nations, cultures and communities have so many amazing recipes to offer, which were passed down through years and generations, changed and adapted over time, reflecting the history of their place of origin and the whole world, recipes of which many have never heard, while others relished through time.

The DishUp world consists of countries and their respectful traditional dishes. As time progresses new countries and dishes will be added. For each country, you will find a short history of its cuisine and also a short history of each dish. There are also four categories that reflect the degree of difficulty, as preparing some of the dishes is not the simplest task. Nevertheless, we tried to keep everything as simple and straightforward as possible, as a lot of us often struggle to find time for reading and cooking.
So join the journey through DishUp world, taste many delicious traditional dishes from the whole world, learn more about national cuisines and their origin, and most importantly be kind to every kind!

Veganisam is not a sacrifice! It is a joy!

The first thing I need to tell you about myself is that, yes, I am vegan. And I am vegan due to my enormous love for animals. When I was three years old, I discovered in a relatively unpleasant way – the description of which I will spare you – where meat comes from. And from that day on I decided to stop eating meat. It took almost two decades before, after learning more about the dairy industry, I decided to give up all food that has been prepared with products of animal origin. And I can proudly say that I have never regretted it.

The second thing about me you should know is that I love to cook, but even more I love to eat. And I love to try new dishes and discover new tastes. But many dishes stayed out of my reach, as they included animal products. So I decided to start preparing all those dishes, which for years kept me curious, using plant-based ingredients and substitutes. And as I was always interested and impressed by different cultures, especially diverse cuisines, I started to research traditional dishes around the world. As the number of new dishes I discovered grew, I started to think about a way to put all their recipes in one, easily accessible place. Ergo, in the famous year of 2020, the idea of DishUp was born, and two years later here we are.

The third thing I will share about myself is that I am a big fan of the ‘70s. I am fascinated with everything related to this decade – from haircuts, fashion and color palettes to music and aesthetics in general – you name it, I love it. This love also found its way to DishUp world through its visual appearance, which is also a small homage to the good, old days.

I am the one standing behind the camera, capturing all the colorful dishes.
My interest in photography started in 2015 during my travels to New Zealand, Australia and Bali. While capturing all the beauty I have seen, my love for photography was developing. After I returned to Austria, I began taking my camera everywhere I went, taking photos as often as possible. Over the years my skills improved and very quickly photography turned into one of my biggest passions in life. I am mainly focused on landscape, travel and sports photography, but through DishUp I discovered food photography as a new way to express my creativity.

Besides my love for photography, I also love to eat, try new dishes and discover new tastes. Being born and growing up in Croatia, meat was naturally the main ingredient in almost every meal and I consumed animal products daily, without ever giving it a thought. In my mid-twenties I realized that my meat intake was too high, and I started to reduce it. But I still couldn’t imagine life without meat and dairy products. However, as my love for photography grew so did my love for the subjects of my photography – animals and nature. After researching and learning more about the impacts the meat and dairy industry has on animal welfare, climate change and food shortages, I decided to try a plant-based diet. I quickly recognized the advantages that a plant-based diet brings with itself and now I can not imagine going back to my “old” habits.

I hope all these colorful dishes and plant-based traditional recipes can inspire you to embark on a vegan journey, try some new dishes and enjoy reinvented already-known dishes.
